A WordPress poll asks a quick question and shows everyone the results the moment they vote. That instant reward is what makes polls so popular: people answer because they want to see how others answered. This guide is ideal for beginners, bloggers and teams who want quick feedback. We cover when to use a poll, how to keep votes fair, and how to set one up in WordPress in about 5 minutes.
The short version
- A poll is one to three multiple choice questions, with the results shown after voting.
- Use it for light questions; use a survey for anything you need to analyze.
- Limit votes to one per device, account or email to keep it fair.
- Show the results on the form, or anywhere on your site with a shortcode.
When should you use a poll instead of a survey?
When the question is quick and the answer is the point. A poll suits:
- Choosing between options, such as the next workshop topic or a new flavor.
- Taking the temperature, such as Are you joining us in person or online?
- Starting a conversation in a blog post or newsletter.
Use a survey when you need several questions, open answers or charts you will study later. A poll is a conversation starter; a survey is research.
How do live poll results work?
As soon as someone votes, they see each question with a bar for every answer, its share and the number of votes, and their own pick is marked your answer. In Echo Forms, results update with every vote, so the 100th voter sees a different picture from the first. The thank-you message still shows above the results. We like results straight after the vote, because people come back later to see the final numbers.
Can you show poll results somewhere else?
Yes. Each poll has its own results shortcode, such as . Put it on a results page, in a sidebar or beside an article about the vote, with the Shortcode block or a shortcode widget in Elementor, and it shows the same live bars without the form. This is handy when you announce a winner, because the results stay current until you close the poll.
How do you stop people voting twice?
Set a limit on entries per person. In Echo Forms the choice is on the form’s Scheduling tab:
| Limit | Good for |
|---|---|
| One per device | A quick, anonymous poll on a blog |
| One per account | Members voting on something that matters |
| One per email address | A public vote where each person gives an email |
No method is perfect. A determined person can use two devices, so keep anything with real stakes, such as a prize, to one vote per email or account.
How to add a WordPress poll, step by step
- Install Echo Forms and Echo Forms Signature.
- Start from a poll template, such as Quick Poll or Yes or No.
- Write your question and 3 to 5 answers.
- Check that Show poll results after sending is on under Settings > Confirmations.
- Set Entries per person on the Scheduling tab.
- Add the form to a post or a page, or open it in a popup.
The polls guide covers every setting with pictures. The whole job takes about 5 minutes.
Which poll templates are there?
Echo Forms Signature comes with five, each with results already switched on and each ready in under 2 minutes: Quick Poll with one question and 4 answers, Yes or No, Feature Vote where people pick more than one, Favorite Pick and This or That with 3 quick either-or questions. You can try the Quick Poll or browse every poll template live.
How long should a poll stay open?
Long enough to get a fair sample, short enough to stay relevant. For a blog poll, 7 to 14 days works well. For a decision, such as an event date, close it 2 days before you need the answer, so you have time to plan. You can schedule a form to close on a date, which stops late votes for you.
Do polls help a website?
They do, because they give people a reason to stay and come back. A poll in a blog post turns readers into participants, and a results page gives them a reason to return. Unlike a long survey, a poll plugin asks almost nothing of the visitor, so far more people take part.
A WordPress poll is one of the quickest ways to hear from your audience. Ask one clear question, show the results straight away, and share what you learned. See surveys and polls for the charts Echo draws for longer surveys too.
