A quiz in WordPress can do more than test knowledge. It can recommend a product, sort leads by what they need, or give people a result they want to share. This guide is ideal for beginners, and for teams who want a quiz that brings in leads. We cover the three kinds of quiz, how to score them, how to design the results and how to follow up.
The short version
- Pick the kind first: points, right or wrong, or personality types.
- Keep it to 5 to 10 questions, each with a clear set of answers.
- Write a result for every possible outcome, so nobody lands on a blank page.
- Ask for an email before the result only if the result is worth it.
What kinds of quiz can you make?
Three, and each one scores differently. Choose the kind before you write a single question, because it decides how every answer counts:
| Kind | How it scores | Good for |
|---|---|---|
| Points | Each answer adds points, and the total decides the result | Fitness level, readiness checks, “how ready are you?” |
| Right or wrong | Each question has a correct answer and a pass mark | Training, knowledge checks, certificates |
| Personality types | Each answer leans toward a type, and the strongest wins | Product finders, “which plan suits you?” |
You choose the kind when you make a form a quiz in Echo Forms, and the quiz panel walks you through four steps: how it scores, scoring the answers, the results and a test run.
How many questions should a quiz have?
Between 5 and 10 for most quizzes, which most people answer in 2 to 3 minutes. Fewer than 5 rarely feels like it earned a result, and more than 10 starts to feel like homework. A knowledge check for staff training can run longer, because people take it on purpose. A lead quiz on your website should finish in about 2 minutes, and a quiz that takes 10 minutes belongs in a course, not on a landing page.
How do you score the answers?
For points, give each answer a number, such as 0 for the weakest and 3 for the strongest. For right or wrong, mark the correct answer and set a pass mark, such as 4 of 5. For personality types, add your types first, then tie each answer to the type it leans toward. You can add a short note after any question that shows once they answer, which turns a test into a lesson.
How should quiz results look?
Like a page worth reaching. A result is where you deliver on the promise of the quiz, so give it a title, a short explanation and one next step. Echo Forms starts you with ready results for each kind, so every score has somewhere to go:
- Points: a low, middle and high result, splitting the real range of scores into three.
- Right or wrong: You passed and Not quite, with their answers reviewed underneath.
- Personality types: one result per type, with the mix of types their answers leaned toward.
You then design each result with blocks: text, an image, a chart, product picks and buttons. The quizzes guide shows every block.

What are answer screens and loading screens?
They are short pauses that make a quiz feel considered. An answer screen shows after a question, such as a fact about the answer they picked. A loading screen shows a line such as Building your plan with steps that tick off one by one. Our guide suggests 3 to 6 seconds for a loading screen, which feels like work is being done without testing anyone’s patience.
If you are new to this, a personality quiz is the easiest to write and the most shared. The Pew Research Center’s guide to writing survey questions gives advice that suits quizzes too: one idea per question, and answers that do not overlap.
Should you ask for an email before the result?
Only if the result is worth it, and say so plainly. Where should we send your routine? works because people get something useful by email. A gate that hides the result until they type an address annoys people, and many will type a fake one. If you do ask, keep the email field as the last question and explain what you send.
