Form drop-off is the gap between the people who start a form and the people who send it. Every form has some, but a big drop at one step means one question is losing people, and fixing it can lift entries more than any redesign. This guide is ideal for beginners and for teams with a multi-step form, an application or a quote form. We show how to read a form funnel, find where people stop, and fix the step that loses them, in WordPress, in about 15 minutes.
The short version
- Track three numbers: views, starts and sends.
- Starts minus sends is your drop-off; divide by starts for a rate.
- On a multi-step form, find the step where most people stop.
- Fix that one step, then measure again after 14 days.
What is a form funnel?
It is the path from seeing a form to sending it, in three counts:
| Count | Means | A low number suggests |
|---|---|---|
| Views | People who saw the form | Traffic or placement |
| Starts | People who began filling it in | The offer or the first question |
| Sends | People who pressed send and it went | The form itself |
If 1,000 people see a form, 300 start it and 120 send it, the form abandonment rate is 60% of those who started. That is the number we work on first, because those 180 people wanted something from you and the form stopped them. We built the funnel counts in Echo Forms for exactly this.
How do you find where people stop?
With Echo Forms Signature, survey results and form analytics count how many people saw, started and sent each form, and show Where they stopped: the step of a multi-step form they were on, or Before sending for a one-page form. Nothing about who they are is kept, only the counts. A step that loses a lot of people is the one to shorten or reword. The free plugin charts views, sends and conversion for the last 14 days.
How to fix form drop-off, step by step
- Open Entries, pick the form, and press See results for its counts.
- Note the step with the biggest drop.
- Look at that step: is there a hard question, a required field people cannot answer, or a price shock?
- Make the hard question optional, move it later, or explain why you ask.
- If it is a price, show it earlier, so nobody is surprised at the end.
- Wait 14 days, then compare the counts.
The survey results guide shows the counts, and our reduce form abandonment guide has more fixes.
Can you win back people who left?
Some of them. With Echo Forms Signature, people can save a long form and finish later, and an abandoned form email can go to people who typed their email and left, with a link back to where they were. Recovery emails run on an hourly check, and saved progress is kept for 30 days. The save and continue guide covers both.
What counts as normal drop-off?
It varies with the form. A short contact form might lose 20% to 30% of starters, while a long application can lose more than half. The Baymard Institute’s checkout research shows how common abandonment is even on simple flows. Compare a form with itself over time, not with other sites.
Form drop-off shows exactly where a form fails people. Measure the funnel for 14 days, fix the worst step, and measure again; most forms find one step worth fixing within a month.
