A popup form in WordPress opens over the page, from a button or on its own, so a form takes no room until someone wants it. Used with care, a lead capture popup collects far more sign-ups than a form at the bottom of a page. This guide is ideal for beginners and for teams who want more sign-ups without annoying visitors. We cover the ways a popup can open, how often to show it, and how to set one up in about 10 minutes.
The short version
- A popup on button click is free and never interrupts anyone.
- With Signature, a popup can open after a delay, on scroll or on exit.
- Show a timed popup once per visitor, not on every page.
- Offer something in return: a guide, a discount, an answer.
When should a form open in a popup?
When the form would crowd the page, or when you want to catch people at the right moment. A Get a quote button that opens the form keeps a services page clean. A newsletter offer that appears after someone has read 60% of an article reaches people who clearly like your writing. We use button popups on almost every site and timed ones on only a few pages.
Which ways can a popup open?
| Way | Edition | Good for |
|---|---|---|
| From a button | Free | Quotes, bookings, contact on busy pages |
| When the page loads | Signature | Announcements people need to see |
| After a delay | Signature | Offers, after 20 or 30 seconds on a page |
| Part way down the page | Signature | Newsletters, after 50% to 70% of an article |
| When someone is about to leave | Signature | A last offer, as an exit intent popup |
With Signature you also choose how often it shows, so a returning visitor is not asked again every day.
How to make a popup form in WordPress, step by step
- Open the form in Echo Forms and switch its display to Popup.
- Write the Button text, such as Get my free quote instead of Open form.
- Choose the popup size, from small to full screen.
- For a long form, switch Close on outside click off, so a stray click does not lose what someone typed.
- With Signature, pick a trigger and how often it shows.
- Put the form on the page, then try it on a phone.
The X button and the Escape key always close it. Any button or link can open the popup too: give it the attribute data-eco-popup-open with the form’s number, which in Elementor goes in the button’s Advanced attributes. The popups guide covers each option.
How do you keep popups from annoying people?
Show a timed popup once per visitor, wait at least 15 seconds or half a page before it opens, and make it easy to close. Avoid covering the whole screen on phones as soon as a page loads: Google warns against intrusive interstitials because they make content hard to reach. A popup that offers something useful, such as a discount or a checklist, feels like a favor instead of an interruption.
What should the popup offer?
One clear thing, said in the heading: Get 10% off your first order, Download the 2026 price guide, Ask us anything. Keep the form to 1 or 2 fields, usually an email and maybe a name, as in our newsletter signup template. Every extra field in a popup costs more sign-ups than the same field on a page, because people did not plan to fill it in.
A popup form in WordPress takes about 10 minutes to set up. Start with a button popup on your busiest page, try a timed one on your best article after 30 days, and keep whichever brings more sign-ups. Our form conversion rate guide shows how to compare them.
Popups that open when it makes sense
Popups from a button are free in Echo Forms. Delay, scroll and exit triggers come with Signature.
