Form design best practices are the small choices that decide whether people finish a form or give up half way. Most of them are simple: clear labels, fewer fields, one column and a button that says what happens. This guide is ideal for beginners and for teams who own a contact, quote or sign-up form. We share the 12 rules we build every Echo Forms template on, each with a short example, and you can check your own form against them in about 15 minutes.
The short version
- Ask fewer questions; every field costs some people.
- Put labels above fields, and never rely on placeholders alone.
- Use one column, and group related questions.
- Make the button say what happens next.
Why does form design matter so much?
Because a form is where interest turns into action, and small frictions add up. A confusing label, a field that rejects a valid phone number or a button that says Submit each lose a few people. Fix 5 of them and a form can send noticeably more entries with the same traffic. Good form UX is mostly about removing doubt: people should always know what to type and what happens next. User friendly forms also take less time, often under 2 minutes for a contact form, which matters most on a phone. The same rules apply to any form in WordPress.
What are the 12 form design best practices?
| # | Rule | Example |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Ask only what you need | Drop Company size if you never use it |
| 2 | Labels above fields | Email, then the box |
| 3 | One column | Name, then email, then message |
| 4 | Group related questions | About you, then Your project |
| 5 | Mark the odd ones out | Mark optional fields if most are required |
| 6 | Use the right field | A date picker for dates, cards for 3 to 5 choices |
| 7 | Right keyboard on phones | Number pad for phone numbers |
| 8 | Helpful errors, next to the field | Add the @ part of your email |
| 9 | A button that says what happens | Get my free quote instead of Submit |
| 10 | Short steps for long forms | 3 steps of 4 fields, with progress |
| 11 | Say what happens next | We reply within 1 working day |
| 12 | Test on a phone | Fill it in with one thumb |
What is a good web form layout?
One column, labels above, related questions grouped, and the button at the end of the last field. A web form layout like this reads top to bottom in one pass, so people make no decisions about where to look next. Two short fields can share a row, such as first and last name, but 3 fields of 33% each in a row are hard on a phone.
How do labels and placeholders differ?
A label sits above the field and stays there; a placeholder is grey text inside the field that vanishes when people type. Placeholders alone make people forget what a field was for, and they are hard to read. The Nielsen Norman Group explains why placeholders are harmful as labels. Use a label always, and a placeholder only for an example, such as you@yourbusiness.com. Our labels vs placeholders guide goes deeper.
How to apply these form design best practices, step by step
- Open your form and list every field with why you need it.
- Remove the fields you cannot justify.
- Rewrite labels as plain questions, with labels above the fields.
- Rename the button to say what happens next.
- Split forms of more than 8 fields into steps.
- Fill it in on your phone and fix anything awkward.
- Compare entries for 14 days before and after.
The style your form guide covers label position, spacing and buttons in Echo Forms, and layout and steps covers multi-step forms.
