Conversational forms

One question at a time, large and centered, with Next and Previous. Long forms feel short and more people finish them.

In the plugin: Echo Forms > Forms > a form > Settings > Conversational form
Signature

Conversational forms come with Echo Forms Signature. While the add-on is off, the form shows all its questions at once again, with its own page breaks.

A long form seen all at once looks like work. Shown one question at a time, the same form feels like a short chat, and more people reach the end.

Switch it on

Signature

Switch on Show one question at a time and save. Every field gets its own screen with Next and Previous, and Enter moves on to the next question. Page Break fields are ignored while this is on.

  • Each question gets a large, centered label and a box that fills the step, even a field set to half width.
  • The progress indicator from General settings shows how far along they are.
  • Hidden values and fields that are not shown take no step of their own.
  • Show or hide rules still work: a question that is hidden by an earlier answer is skipped.

It works wherever the form is: on a page, in a popup or on its own landing page.

Start with a welcome screen

A welcome screen greets people before the first question with a heading, a few words and a Start button. It is set on the Screens tab, where it works for any form, not only a conversational one. See Greet people with a welcome screen.

Show a progress bar

Signature

Switch on Show a progress bar and a thin bar above the questions shows how far along they are. A form whose progress indicator is a style of its own, such as segments, keeps it; numbered steps become the bar, because one question at a time has too many steps to number. Switch it off for no indicator at all.

Make it read like a conversation

Signature
  • Write each label as a question: What should we call you? reads better than Name.
  • Use the field’s description for a short why: So we can say hello properly.
  • Put the easy questions first and the email address near the end, once they are invested.
  • Use choices as cards for a question with a few answers: one tap and on to the next.
